East Indian Rosewood

East Indian Rosewood

  • Species: Dalbergia Latifolia

  • Color: Dark Brown to Dark Purplish

  • Uses: Musical Instruments, Furniture, Turnery Handles. East Indian Rosewood has been used extensively on acoustic guitars since the mid-1960s as a substitute for the now-endangered Brazilian Rosewood.

Indian Laurel

Indian Laurel

  • Species: Terminalia Tomentosa

  • Colour: Light brown to dark brown with darker, nearly black streaks

  • Uses: Veneer, furniture, cabinetry, boatbuilding, turned objects, and other small specialty items.

Mango Wood

  • Species: Mangifera indica

  • Color: Heartwood ranges from pink to a darker black streaks.

  • Uses: Veneer, plywood, musical instruments (percussion), furniture, flooring, boatbuilding, carving, and turned objects.

Indian Ebony

 Indian Ebony

  • Species: Diospyros ebenum

  • Color: Heartwood is jet black, sometimes with grey or dark brown streaks.

  • Uses: Inlay, carving, musical instrument parts for piano keys, bridges, nuts, etc, and turned objects.

  • Species: Swietenia Mahagoni

  • Colour: Red Brown

  • Uses: Its wood is used in making furniture, fixtures, musical instruments, inlay, boats, caskets and many more. Its wood is a very popular material for drum making.

Sheesham Wood

  • Species: Dalbergia sissoo

  • Color: Heartwood ranges from golden brown to a darker reddish brown.

  • Uses: Veneer, plywood, musical instruments (percussion), furniture, flooring, boatbuilding, carving, and turned objects.

Andaman Padauk

Andaman Padauk

  • Species: Pterocarpus dalbergioides

  • Color: Pale pinkish orange to deep brownish red. 

  • Uses: Veneer, flooring, turned objects, musical instruments, furniture, tool handles, and other small specialty wood objects.

Red Sanders (Pterocarpus Sanatalinus)

Red Sanders

  • Species: Pterocarpus Santilinus

  • Color: Dark orange to a deeper reddish purple, often with darker streaks throughout. Colors tend to darken significantly over time to deep reddish purple to nearly black.

  • Uses: Fine furniture and carvings and Musical Instruments.

East Indian Satinwood

East Indian Satinwood

  • Species: Chloroxylon swietenia

  • Color: Heartwood is from light to golden yellow, to orangish brown. Sapwood is whitish yellow and paler than heartwood, but not always clearly demarcated from heartwood.

  • Uses: Veneer, inlays, fine furniture, turned objects, and other small specialty items.
